Mpeg layer-3 is a relatively new audio-file format that allows crystal-clear stereo audio clips or songs to be compressed into very small files. The miracle of this is that in the time it used to take to download a full-length stereo song, you can now download a whole album. A four-minute pop song takes only about 3 megabytes of space. Once these files are downloaded, their clarity and sound-resolution is amazing, and the utilities to play them allow unprecedented interfaces, with EQ's, playlists, repeat, shuffle, etc. Until some bugs are worked out, though, you need to know some hints.
First, you need an mp3-player. We recommend Winamp, which has Mac and Windows versions. It is free, and a small, short download. You can download it here.
