St. Valentine's Garage was recorded over the course of about three years. We intended for it to serve as "demo's" during our quest to be signed to a record contract, but after settling on Mammoth Records, Steve convinced us not to go back in and re-record everything. This allowed us to keep the original feel of the demo's, and allowed Mammoth to keep a bunch of money.
After going back into the studio to touch-up the work we had already finished, Scott threw on "Mother's Friends" and "Funeral", and we did a non-arranged version of "Die Young". We did a last minute re-recording of "Fruit Pie", which Scott was suddenly too sick to sing, so the original demo vocals were sampled back in by Ed. This took about 15 hours as Ed slid the old vocals in two-words-at-a-time. We also re-recorded an older song, called "The Bartender", which was added to the EP "Stretch".
The original mastering was done by "Howie" Weinberg, and sucked so badly that we thought of driving up to New York and doing it ourselves. Let's put it this way, it sounded even flatter than it does on your damn CD. We made him do it again.
