Nick Ferrara is Kill Creek's faithful and trustworthy lawyer. His job is to protect us from evil. To the right, he can be seen exchanging business cards with Mammoth's Label Manager, Steve Balcom (Nick is the one on the right). This is a large part of Nick's job: cheerfully greeting hot-shot industry big-wigs and pretending to be excited to do so. Curiously, this is also a big part of Steve's job, so in the photo on the right, they are both clearly fulfilling their job descriptions. Ironically, this card exchange took place in a hotel (very cliche) at an industry pow-wow called "South by Southwest" (even more cliche). At these conventions, card exchanges happen at an extraordinary rate as lawyers and industry hot-shots scurry around looking for someone to exploit. Fortunately, Nick and Steve were able to work things out so that we could all be mutually exploited. Since that beautiful day, we have been happily making records for Mr. Balcom. Of course, Steve has his own lawyers who have their own cards, but we have no pictures of them.

Nick also takes us to dinner and discusses high-concept ideas with our manager, Dave. He also protected our future by making sure that we were totally loaded when we signed our recording contracts, so that they might be found void if necessary. He was even smart enough to take pictures of us, red-eyed and drooling, signing our lives away without any idea of what we were doing. Still, of all the people we have been used and exploited by, Nick and Steve are by far the most fun to hang out with. That is why they are smiling.
