MORE OF E.J.'s RECOLLECTIONS OF EVENTS TRANSPIRING DURING THE EARLY WINTER OF 1991

Late December, 1991

The "Cthonic" Sessions
Some Junkies' (not his real name) Basement Studio, Kansas City

So I finally got to record Kill Creek (Scott, Ron, Pat, and Ken). The studio was owned by a "friend" of theirs that had recorded their previous endeavors. It consisted of an Allen and Heath console with twenty-two functioning channels, a prehistoric 3M tape machine that occasionally had "spells" which cost me my fingertips, a consumer grade dbx compressor and a Korg delay unit. There were no isolation rooms, so getting sounds was a complete craps shoot. After the first couple of days, J.P. (that isn't really his name, not even close) would call us at 6:00 in the morning to make sure that we were coming and bringing cash. Pretty soon he would accept $20 or $60 or $10 or $1 or whatever we had, call it even for the day, and run screaming out the door, not to be seen again until the early phone call on the following morning. The substandard gear, (much of which slowly disappeared day after day to be "repaired" or "loaned") combined with my inexperience and lack of professionalism made for a horrendous recording. Nevertheless, my affable personality and ability to drink until I puked and then drink more won them over, and the hideous sound of the final mixes didn't destroy our blossoming friendship.
