BEFORE THE GREAT COLLEGE EXPERIMENT

Shup Bish / Kill Creek Pic

The first practices were arranged by breaking into Lawrence's once infamous "Outhouse", a punk-rock club in the middle of a cornfield east of Lawrence. Donny, the biker that owned it, let them practice there for a while in exchange for having Scott paint a Harley Davidson eagle on the door. Scott tried to play guitar. The first bassist, Chris, sometimes showed up at gigs, but they finally just kept his equipment and invited a guy more desperate for attention. His name was Nick and he was certainly an asshole, and he didn't know what straight-edge meant, so he and Ron had few words. They played about 20 shows under the idiotic moniker "Shup Bish", and during this period, they kicked John and Nick out of the band about 30 times. Unbeknownst to Scott, John did things like placing himself in charge of making certain that the soundguys never included Scott's guitar in the P.A., and was a dick on the phone to everyone's mom. Nick treated women funny, and later joined the Coors Light Silver Bullet Band.
